Description
On a recent vacation to Dorset in England I visited this very picturesque village. Corfe is situated between Swanage and Wareham and boasts an impressive castle that towers over the village. Corfe Castle is over 1000 years old and is now owned by the National Trust. Most of the houses are built of beautiful Purbeck stone which is a lovely grey colour. However, for this painting I wanted to introduce a little colour.
The pub on the left is the Greyhound Inn and below is an excerpt from an article written by the owner Jacci Pestana:
The name 'Greyhound' may have been derived from the King's Greyhounds, royal messengers who wore greyhound emblems on their tunics and were renowned for
their swiftness on horseback. If so, this would suggest Tudor origins for the pub, Corfe Castle being one of the five royal castles in England at that time. Later in history many stage coaches adopted the name Greyhound, which one may assume led to the name of the Greyhound coaches in the United States.
The original was sold through the Barrie Art Club.
